About Nylon Suture
Nylon is the most commonly used non-absorbable suture in dermatologic surgery. Nylon suture is available both in monofilamentous and coated multifilamentous (Nurulon: Ethicon; Surgilon: USSDG) varieties, with the latter being more common. Both have high tensile strength and are absorbed at a rate of 15–20% per year if left in tissue. Monofilamentous nylon passes easily through the skin and causes minimal tissue reactions but has a high degree of memory, decreasing its pliability, handling, and knot security.
